Cine
Las Americas Film Festival showcases narrative and documentary films made
by or about Latin Americans or Indigenous groups of the Americas, granting
juried and audience awards in different categories. The films screen at state-of-the-art
multiplex theaters as well as local art house venues in Austin, Texas.
Private and public events and parties complement each day of
screenings, creating the opportunity for professional exchange and a close
connection with the public.
National and international film professionals and scholars come
to Austin every year to participate in the festival, making Cine Las Americas
a unique environment in which to share experience, nurture cultural exchange,
address identity issues, and appreciate the best Latin and Indigenous films
of the Americas.
Emergencia, the youth film competition, is a vital component
of the film festival. Screening works made by artists 19 years old or younger,
this section of the festival is produced and juried by students who participate
in Cine Las Americas’ education programs for local at-risk youth.
The 8th Cine Las Americas Film Festival is scheduled for April
20 – 24, 2005.
