The Mechanics of Great Scenes
If scenes and comedy are ultimately stories, then we need to understand the basic structure that makes them tick.

Randy Dixon is regarded as one of the most experienced improvisational artists in the field. He is afounding member of Unexpected Productions, Seattle’s longest running improvisational theater company and has served as the company’s Artistic Director since 1988. During his tenure Unexpected Productions has established a reputation of presenting high-quality shows, classes and workshops. He is the founder and curator of the influential Seattle International Festival of Improvisation, which occurs annually.

Randy has taught improvisational theater and acting all over Europe, Australia, New Zealand, U.S. and Canada as well as at Colleges and Universities. He has taught most of the major improvisational troupes in Europe. His work has influenced groups such as Theater Im Bahnhof of Austria, Die Gorillias & Hidden Shakespeare of Germany, Crumbs and Instant Theatre of Canada.

He is also the founder and director of Orcas Island Project, an international collective of performers who will be premiering their new work AfterLife in Slovenia in 2011. In addition he has a new group called Pinky Benson, which will be premiering in Seattle in 2011.

His approach to improvisation has been influenced by his work and studies with late Del Close (creator of the Harold), the late Paul Sills (creator of Second City), and Keith Johnstone (Author of Impro). He combines this extensive training with his interest and education in Mythological Studies.

In addition to his work with theater professionals and the general public, he has taught workshops for many corporate clients.

Outside of his improvisational work, Randy has written plays, served on the board for Theater Puget Sound and Seattle Sketchfest, served on the editorial board for the Salt Journal a journal of Myth, Religion, Psychology and Ideas, and served on the advisory board of Foolproof: the Northwest Comedy Festival.
