Writing Short Stories with Improv
with Ceej Allen
Sunday, August 21 AND 28, 2-4pm

Improvised theater is sort of a disposable art form. You do a show and it is done and, except for memory, it evaporates. What if you could learn how to take a moment from a show or a moment when you improvise alone somewhere just for fun and make it into a short story? Ceej Allen has written over 60 short stories in the past few months. It all started one day when he was improvising a monologue on his back porch and thought it would make for a good story and went inside and immediately typed it out. He has shared many of his short stories with many different people and some of them have exchanged short stories with him. Ceej’s stories are often funny and heartfelt on the same page. Sometimes absurd and sometimes dark. Sometimes very sad. In this workshop he will help teach you how to pull from your own life to be inspired to create short stories. Through improv!

This class will take place over two weeks. Ceej will send two of his short stories to any participants in advance for discussion in class. In the first week, students will take turns doing monologues and/or scenes that they will then use to write a story before the next week.

Ceej Allen has been improvising for thirteen years and has performed in over 1,000 shows–mostly in Austin, but also across the country. He has also written and performed in sketch groups and made a bunch of short films.  He is a member of Confidence Men: Improvised Mamet as well as the duo Franz and Dave.
