Learning improvisation is a thrilling, terrifying undertaking for most people – we are all drawn to it for different reasons and bring our own individual strengths and weaknesses to the process. Sharing improvisation with a new group of students means creating an experience that diffuses their anxiety and their skepticism, that sets a tone of playfulness and fun that helps them get out of their own way and step bravely into risk and vulnerability and learning. Teaching improv is its own art form.

If you’re excited about the idea of sharing improv with more people, we want to give you the tools to do it as effectively, efficiently and humanely as possible. This workshop doubles as an improv workshop, so you’ll get to play a lot as we transparently cover the why and how of what we’re doing. We’ll cover:

-Creating an atmosphere of fun and support
-Getting people out of their heads at every opportunity
-Finding the right level of challenge for each class and each student
-Inviting students to reflect on and take ownership of their experiences
-Helping groups connect and appreciate each other

The goal for this class is to share the tools that we use in The Hideout’s adult classes and Professional Development program as far and wide as possible. If you’re interested in having a conversation about teaching at the Hideout, send Andy an email and teaching track and how that process works.

Andy Crouch has been the Hideout Theatre’s Director of Education for over 15 years. He’s passionate about teaching improv and has learned a boatload of best practices, tips, tricks and philosophies from some of the best instructors in the world.
