Mainstage Workshops

Every month is a different 3-week workshop inspired by a Hideout Mainstage or Student Mainstage show, taught by our top directors, teachers and rock-star improvisers.

Upcoming Mainstage Workshops:

It’s a Freaking Musical! with Mallory Schlossberg
March 10, 17 & 24 | Saturdays 1-3:30pm

Improvised musicals are blowing up at The Hideout (Death by Musical, Orphans!, Soundstage 23). You already know the basics of musical improv (verse-chorus-etc-etc). You’ve taken classes or been in a show, but you’re not quite confident and you’re not having as much fun as you could be. In this workshop we’ll dig into the “emotional fundamentals” of musical improv and focus on taking the rules you know to the next level, so that you can up your game as a performer and really make your musical improv like…a musical. Topics will include finding the game or emotional core of a song, using stage presence/picture/backline dancing for maximum effect, figuring out what kind of song you’re singing in the moment, and a ton of other good stuff. We’ll have fun with the rules, and then ultimately break them, because…improv. *Note: previous musical improv experience required.

Mallory Schlossberg has been improvising since 2011. Originally from New York, she performed on the Magnet Theater’s first ever all-female musical house team The Jezebelles from 2013 to 2015. Since moving to Austin in spring 2017, she’s had the privilege of performing in several shows including Death by Musical and Orphans!, and she’ll be co-directing Grand Misery at The Hideout in January 2019.

Making the Well-Made Play with Lindsey McGowen
March 31, April 7 & 14  | Saturdays 1-3:30pm

Improvised theater is the Hideout’s specialty, but how do you take a show from a premise to a performance? In this workshop, we’ll talk a little about theater history, a little about dramaturgy, and a whole lot about how we perform theater in order to make the biggest impact on our audience that we can.

Lindsey McGowen is a B. Iden Payne Award-winning technical designer and improvisor. She has a BA in Theater Tech, has been improvising since 2014 and has been the Mainstage Technical Director at the Hideout Theatre since 2016. She is directing the upcoming Student Mainstage production The Well-Made Play in August.

Secrets and Improv with Roy Janik
May 5, 12 & 19 | Saturdays 1-3:30pm

Austin Secrets has enjoyed seven seasons at The Hideout and spawned several spinoff shows in cities around the world. In the show, four different techniques for utilizing secrets in improv scenework are employed. Explore all of these through the course of this workshop, and learn techniques for creating satisfying “serious” scenes without resorting to melodrama.

Roy Janik is the Artistic Director (and a co-owner) of The Hideout Theatre and tours internationally with Parallelogramophonograph. He has performed in many of The Hideout’s mainstage productions, and is the creator and director of the critically-acclaimed show Austin Secrets.
