LEVEL B FLAT: LEVEL ONE MUSICAL IMPROV

Sometimes improv needs a little razzle dazzle. Kacey Samiee (Founding member of Girls Girls Girls and director of the Hideout’s 2012 Rock Opera) will lead you through the basics of musical improv in both short form shows and long form narrative. Learn to seamlessly weave in and out of song, communicate with the musical improviser, work as an ensemble or solo singer, apply song structure, and take a first crack at this amazing (and totally freakin’ scary) form of improv. The musical accompanist is Ammon Taylor. Classes meet for six weeks, three hours each week, limit 14 students. You must have completed Level Five at the Hideout or have equivalent improv training to take this class. The workshop will culminate in a student showcase for friends and family in the Sunday Weekender.

LEVEL B NATURAL: LEVEL TWO MUSICAL IMPROV

This second class in our musical improv series will build on the basics and invite the performers to step up their game, creating more complex song structures, enhanced confidence and commitment, and begin to weave songs into an improvised narrative. You’ll begin to explore and master solo song performance and structure techniques, character intro songs, as well as subtly directing a group number from within a show. You will explore the art of rhyming on the fly and up your precision and timing when it comes to singing on stage.

LEVEL B SHARP: LEVEL THREE MUSICAL IMPROV

Take what you’ve learned in the first levels of improvised singing and apply them to narrative. Learn where, when, and what to sing about to best support your story. Find the song behind the song and start to improvise lyrics that are poetic and metaphoric. Work on opening and closing numbers and start to build your own musical formats and troupes. You must have completed the previous two singing classes and Level Six at the Hideout or have equivalent narrative improv training to take this class. The workshop will culminate in a student showcase for friends and family in the Sunday Weekender.
