Improv by The Groundlings
with Beth Burns
Wednesday, June 19, 7-9:30pm

The Groundlings is a sketch comedy and improv theatre formed in Los Angeles in 1974. Our technique focuses on story-telling through connection, character point of view, emotional adjustment, and instant, enthusiastic agreement. We work towards turning the lights on in a scene right away by getting out all crucial pieces of information (Who, What, Where, and Why) through all tools available, listening well, staying connected, and being your best actor. Let your character tell the story by honoring every piece of information, and have a great time!

Beth Burns began her career at the world-famous Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles where she worked as a teacher and performer for over ten years. She is an actor (Saturday Night Live, American Crime, Friday Night Lights), director, producer, and NEA-award winning playwright, and studied under theatre luminaries José Quintero, Sydney Berger, and Edward Albee. Now, Burns is the Founder/Artistic Director of the award-winning Hidden Room Theatre, which specializes in immersive/interactive new works and scholar-driven classics. The company has toured the US and abroad, including stops at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Oxford University, the British Library, and the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon. An interactive piece created by Burns for the Hidden Room was called “the future of theatre” by the Guardian’s Lyn Gardner and was a Best of Fest pick at the Edinburgh Fringe. The Hidden Room has been featured on NPR, BBC World News, London’s Channel 4, American Theatre Magazine, and more. The company has been the subject of numerous scholarly papers, and has accumulated over fifty awards for theatre in its seven short years. Burns also works as a freelance director, and most recently directed the American Shakespeare Center’s wildly popular production of Twelfth Night, deemed by critics to be “as close to perfect as you can get.”
