Dramatic Improv Workshop

90% of all improv is comedy, but the full range of what improv can be is unlimited: hence this one day intense workshop.

Two of the Hideout’s owners, Kareem Badr and Roy Janik, will take you through 5 hours of instruction in serious, dramatic improv.

Kareem and Roy, as members of Parallelogramophonograph, have forayed into dramatic work on numerous occasions, most notably in the shows Villainy (villain-centric stories) and Eris 2035 (psychological science fiction).

More recently, Kareem has directed The Violet Underbelly, The Hideout’s gritty take on Film Noir. Similarly, Roy has directed Austin Secrets, the Hideout’s wildly-successful show inspired by PostSecret.

In this workshop you will:

* Learn to slow down and connect with your scene partners
* Learn to react naturally in the moment, without the safety net of “gagging out”
* Learn to be emotional without being melodramatic
* Get feedback on scenework during and immediately following scenes
* Learn techniques developed when Kareem directed The Violet Underbelly
* Experience exercises created for the Austin Secrets rehearsals
* Get the opportunity to do dramatic work without worrying about whether or not you’re funny enough
